A 43-year-old man from Bartica has been sentenced on drug trafficking charges, the Guyana Police Force said on Saturday.
Asif Bacchus, an unemployed resident of Arcade Street in the gold-dependent town of Bartica, was charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking, in violation of the country’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act.
Police said he appeared via Zoom before the Bartica Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
Presiding magistrate Ravindra Mohabir read the charge to which Bacchus pleaded guilty.
He was sentenced to 48 months in prison.
