A Venezuela-based Guyanese man and an Essequibo Coast businessman are among four persons who were arrested on Sunday in connection with their alleged possession of 154 pounds of cocaine that investigators believed was heading to Europe.
The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) said the men were arrested after agents seized the cocaine in the vicinity of Parika, East Bank Essequibo.
Investigators said the cocaine was brought to Guyana to be shipped to Europe where it could have fetched as much as 2.1 million euros (US$2.4 million).
The suspects were escorted to CANU’s headquarters shortly after they were held in a vehicle.
In recent weeks, law enforcement agents in The Netherlands have been seizing cocaine that arrived from Suriname.
The most recent seizure was on January 12 when Dutch police and customs officers intercepted 319 kilogrammes of cocaine in a container of deep-frozen fish.
