The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has reported the country last year recorded a 25.5 percent reduction in serious crimes compared to 2024.
“Overall, serious crimes declined from 1,235 cases in 2024 to 920 cases in 2025, representing a 25.5% reduction,” the law enforcement agency said in a statement about its crime-fighting performance from January 1 to December 31, 2025.
“The data reflects notable decreases in several major offence categories: robbery, burglary, break and enter and larceny, rape, and kidnapping, indicating positive trends in crime reduction efforts across the country,” the police force said.
In relation to road safety, statistics for the same period show that 124 fatal accidents were recorded in 2025, resulting in 137 road traffic deaths. There were 132 road deaths from 117 fatal accidents in 2024 which means there was a 3.7 percent increase in road accidents in 2025, a police source added.
Additionally, reductions were recorded in other accident categories, including serious, minor, and damage-only accidents, contributing to an overall decline in total road accidents from 2,405 in 2024 to 2,177 in 2025.
The GPF says it remains committed to sustained crime-fighting strategies, community engagement, and proactive policing as it continues to work toward ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.
The GPF sought to explain the protracted delay in responding to and updating the media about repeated queries to the Police Force Public Relations Officer, Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken, and Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum for those figures. ”
“The Force emphasises that annual crime and traffic statistics are subject to a structured process of compilation, verification, and approval prior to public release. This process is essential to ensure that all figures are accurate, complete, and fully reconciled across all divisions.
While crime trends and provisional data were presented during the Christmas policing briefing in November 2025, the reporting year was not yet formally closed, and the data was still undergoing final verification,” police said.
