At least eight staff members of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) have been arrested by police in connection with the alleged evasion of taxes on imported vehicles, a top GRA official said Tuesday.
The source, who requested anonymity, told Demerara Waves Online News that so far there appears to be “collusion” between customs officers and licence revenue officers.
The source said the cars that have now come under the microscope were imported by the well-known importing agency, BM Soat Auto Sales.
Investigators were yet to determine how much taxes and duties were not allegedly declared in this latest probe.
BM Soat earlier this year paid more than GY$220 million for declarations that were allegedly false.
The GRA source said BM Soat, who has pending court matters, remains a person of interest.
