Chief Justice Navindra Singh on Thursday acceded to a request by the police for the further detention of the confessed gas station bomber and eight other suspects, Deputy Police Commissioner Wendell Blanhum said.
Constitutionally, police cannot detain persons for more than 72 hours without charges being laid unless they seek a High Court extension with sufficient justification.
Mr Blanhum, who heads the Guyana Police Force’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID), said detectives applied to the High Court for an extension of the detention of Daniel Alexander Ramirez Peodomo and seven other persons.
Mr Blanhum said the 72-hour period for the ninth person has not yet expired and he also remained in police custody.
Those arrested by police for the Sunday, October 26 remote detonation of the bomb include several Guyanese.
Police continue to decline to disclose the motive for bombing the Mobil gas station on Regent and King streets, Georgetown and what type of explosive was used.
Police said Ramirez Peodomo and a Venezuelan accomplice entered Guyana illegally and landed at a koker at Parika at about 8 a.m. on Sunday, hours before the explosion.
Police have so far found out that Ramirez Peodomo and other persons conducted surveillance of the Mobil gas station before attempting to place a bulky black bag in a waste bin near a fuel pump.
After a pump attendant insisted that he should not do so, he left the bag near a car in the vicinity of stored cooking gas bottles.
The bomb was detonated at about 7:24 p.m., shattering a car, killing a six-year-old girl and injuring several other occupants of that vehicle.
