A 49-year-old man of Stewartville, West Coast Demerara, was on Thursday arraigned for the alleged murder of his 15-year-old stepson, the Guyana Police Force.
The law enforcement agency said labourer Balram “Navin” Bessessar was arrested on October 3, 2025 when he allegedly murdered Sudesh “Joel” Singh. He was charged on October 7.
Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh read the charge to Bessessar. The man was not required to plead, and was remanded to prison.
Police said the boy resided with his 35-year-old unemployed mother, Roshanini Surujballi, and the suspect, who is his stepfather, in the lower flat of a two-storey wooden and concrete structure.
Investigators said the killing stemmed from a disagreement over the slipping of Bessessar’s bicylce chain while the boy was riding. “As a result, an argument ensued between them and the suspect ran into his kitchen, picked up a cutlass, rushed towards and fired about three chops at Sudesh. This caused him to receive injuries to his neck area, and he fell to the ground,” police said.
Bessessar then walked out of the yard and went to the Leonora Police Station, where he reported the matter and was arrested.
Police said they saw a cutlass near Singh’s motionless and bleeding body.
