The investigation into the discovery of almost 70 kilogrammes of cocaine at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) has widened to overseas with Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit agents questioning several persons and sharing information with KLM Dutch Airlines, CANU Director James Singh said on Thursday.
He told Demerara Waves Online News that the baggage handler, who works with a handling service based at the CJIA, has been cooperating with investigators but no one has so far been charged. He said eight persons from different entities at the airport and elsewhere had been questioned. “The investigation is still ongoing. We have questioned several persons,” he also told reporters earlier in the day.
Mr Singh said when the cocaine was found on September 20, 2025 no one was there, prompting CANU to engage its international partners to determine where it was going and “who may have been on the end (sic) to receive it.” The CANU chief said his organisation was also working with the Guyana Police Force, CJIA authorities and other stakeholders to determine “the method of concealment.”
He said CANU has “an idea who is behind this” but the hard work was now to obtain evidence that would be admissible in court here and overseas if anyone is charged. Asked if surveillance cameras had picked up who had taken the 53 parcels of cocaine to the CJIA, he said, “we have an idea as to how the drugs got there” but declined to provide details for security reasons.
