Brazilians convicted for illegal gold buying

Last Updated on Tuesday, 23 September 2025, 21:17 by Writer

Two Brazilian miners were on Tuesday convicted of buying gold in violation of the Gold Board Act, police said.

The Guyana Police Force did not state the amount of gold that was sold, but said the men pleaded guilty to the offence of “purchasing gold from a person other than the board or agent authorised by the board”.

They were each charged GY$75,000 or given seven months imprisonment.

The Boa Vista-based miners — Jose Antonio Rodrigues Dos Santos, 58, and Isac Aguiar Abreu, 36 — were arrested on September 22 and appeared on September 23 before Lethem Magistrate Omadatt Chandan, and charged separately.

The Guyana government has been making efforts to dent the illegal gold trade with persons from neighbouring Brazil.
