A suspected microwave oven thief was late on Tuesday night shot and injured after he challenged police with a cutlass in an effort to resist arrest, police said.

Shafeek Mohamed, a resident of Sand Reef, Annandale, East Coast Demerara, is nursing a gunshot wound during an incident at about 11 pm at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.
The Guyana Police Force reported that a sergeant, stationed at the Lusignan Police Outpost, received information from an unknown caller that Mohamed was seen exiting someone’s yard with a microwave oven.
The sergeant and another rank, who were on foot patrol duty, responded and saw the suspect attempting to conceal an oven.
The ranks shouted and approached the suspect, who resisted by taking out a cutlass from his waist, and in a hostile manner, challenged the ranks. The sergeant warned him to desist, but he kept advancing, and he was shot in his left thigh,” police said in a statement.
Mohamed was escorted to the Enmore Regional Hospital, where he is admitted and receiving treatment. His condition is stable, police added.
Police say Mohamed was wanted for a series of offences in the district.
