Flashback: Attorney-at-Law, Nigel Hughes on the campaign trail when he was Chairman of the Alliance For Change.

Mr Nigel Hughes has resigned as leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC), less than one month after that party received a sound thrashing at the September 1 general and regional elections, party sources confirmed.

Mr Hughes declined to comment, instead referring all queries to the AFC’s General Secretary. According to the resignation seen by Demerara Waves Online News, he has taken full responsibility for his party’s defeat. “Unfortunately, the results were beyond disappointing the responsibility for which rests solely on my shoulder(s),” he said in the letter.

The AFC barely garnered 3,610 votes from all 10 electoral districts in the 2025 polls, reflecting a major decline in its electoral performance. In its first electoral outing in 2006, the AFC had won five seats with 28,366 votes and seven seats with 35,333 votes in 2011.

But sources indicated that the undated resignation was received and efforts were being made to convince him to remain in the role until a new AFC leader is elected.

In tendering “my immediate resignation” as AFC Leader, Mr Hughes thanked the party for allowing him the opportunity to lead it in “difficult times.” At the same time, he said his party still holds great potential in Guyana’s body politic. “I believe the party has a great role to play in the development of this great country of ours and I wish the Chair and the executive my best wishes and support on its forward trajectory,” he said.

Mr Hughes was elected as leader on June 29, 2024.
