PPP, APNU, WIN confident of victory

-Jagdeo urges supporters to ignore social media fearmongering
-APNU will “beat” PPP
-WIN announces prime ministerial candidate

The People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC), A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) on Saturday, at their final rallies, said they were brimming with confidence of winning next Monday’s general and regional elections.

There are 757,690 persons who are eligible to elect the president, 65 National Assembly seats and 10 regional councils.

PPP General Secretary General Bharrat Jagdeo said he was exceptionally confident that his party would retain power when the votes are counted and the results declared. “Trust me! If I say I’m confident- I’m a man who generally don’t say things easily-but if I say I am confident, then I am confident,” he told a huge rally at Lusignan market tarmac, East Coast Demerara.

Mr Jagdeo also indicated that he was not worried about talk of reducing the PPP to a minority government, even as he urged supporters, especially young people, not to take any risk. Mr Jagdeo specifically dismissed opposition claims that they would win support from the Amerindian communities. “Watch out for the result. We’d beat them in those communities,” he said.

According to the incumbent’s 2nd Vice President, party supporters need to mobilise others to go out and vote. At the same time, he advised them to be vigilant against efforts by APNU to use fake news to discourage people from voting. “Watch out. The social media activists are going to work overtime,” he said. “They’re going to come with a lot of lies and that is intended to keep people away from the party and at home,” he said. He assured party faithful that the security forces would be on standby to “deal with them in any attempt to disrupt the polls.”

At APNU’s rally, presidential candidate Aubrey Norton was very optimistic that under his leadership the People’s National Congress Reform-led coalition would “beat the PPP” in 2025. Buoyed by an unprecedented large turnout under his leadership, Mr Norton told attendees that up to a six weeks ago, President Irfaan Ali had been speaking about a “landslide” victory but now it seems that the “land slide from under he foot.” “We must continue to make the land slide from under their feet,” he said.

Earlier this month, Mr Norton told a public meeting that APNU needs at least 5 percent to win the elections.

WIN presidential candidate, Azruddin Mohamed repeatedly said that his party would win the elections because his is the only multi-ethnic party. In contrast, he said the PPP liked to pretend that they like Afro-Guyanese “but we know this is not so”. He remarked that “the green party (APNU)-they ain’t making sense right now”. He said WIN needs 130,000 votes from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica). “I know we will get it because we have a lot of first-time voters and everybody fed up with the red (PPPC) and green party,” he said.

In the 2020 elections, the then coalition of APNU+ Alliance For Change had won 116,403 in the Region Four vote.

At the stroke of midnight just before closing his final rally, Mr Mohamed announced that Tabita Sarabo-Halley would be his prime ministerial running mate. The WIN leader was for the first time endorsed by his father, Nazar “Shell” Mohamed on a political platform. The Mohameds were last year sanctioned by the United States for alleged tax evasion on gold exports.

Common promises among the the three parties are that they each would “put money in your pocket”, set up a development bank, improve housing, fight corruption, and increase pensions, salaries and cash grants.
