Jagdeo warns opposition that security forces on standby

Last Updated on Sunday, 24 August 2025, 21:44 by Writer

Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo on Sunday warned the opposition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) that the police and army were prepared to crush unrest after the results of the September 1 general and regional elections are declared.

“I want to promise them that in case they try to create trouble when they are defeated by this massive victory of the PPP (People’s Progressive Party), they’re going to get into big trouble.

The security forces are ready to take on anyone who tries to disrupt the peaceful polls in these upcoming elections,” he told a large rally at Stewartville, West Coast Demerara.

Predicting a “huge, decisive, overwhelming victory” for the PPP next week, Mr Jagdeo said APNU and WIN were facing certain defeat.

He referred to APNU presidential candidate Aubrey Norton saying about two weeks ago that if the PPPC rigs the elections, his party would behave “bad”. Mr Jagdeo said WIN Leader Azruddin Mohamed had also issued similar threats.

The PPP General Secretary was convinced that his party could resist the APNU and WIN because it was able to take on the then APNU+Alliance For Change administration led by former president David Granger.

“If we dealt with Granger and his cabal, we can deal with these two kangalangs any day,” he said.

The PPP General Secretary appealed to supporters to come out early and vote in favour of the PPP.
