Three persons were on Monday placed in custody in connection with the firing of 19 nine mm bullets on a South Ruimveldt Street where the Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, lives, police said.
The police officer said a fourth person was being sought in relation to last Saturday night’s shooting on Sugar Cane Road.
Based on a Guyana Police Force account, the shooting was not targeted at the government minister who also lives on Sugar Cane Road.
Police have so far said the shooter was a male who discharged the loaded firearm while he was in a black Mercedes Benz vehicle.
Investigations revealed that there was a ‘social’ at the home of 69-year old Richard Austin, a businessman of Sugar Cane Road, South Ruimvelt, with several students who had written the CXC examination. They were invited by Austin’s 16-year-old son, a student who also wrote the CXC exams.
“According to eyewitness reports, a 15-year-old female student who was at the ‘social’ and the suspect were standing next to a black Mercedes Benz vehicle parked on the road, and they were hugging. Shortly after, the suspect entered the car and drove off at a fast rate. As the car was moving, the suspect pointed a handgun through the driver’s side window, discharged several rounds in the air, and continued to drive heading west until the vehicle disappeared,” police said in a statement.
The registration number of the car was not seen. Police said the 15-year-old female student, when questioned, refused to identify her companion suspect.
