Two men were shot and injured during an exchange of gunfire with two other masked men in ‘A’ Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown, police said.

“CCTV cameras in the area captured the scene, and investigators observed that it was an exchange of gunfire between the suspects and the victims,” the Guyana Police Force said in a statement.

The injured men’s hands were swabbed by police investigators for gunpowder residue, police added.

The injured were identified as 34-year-old Andra Stewart of Guyhoc Park and Fifth Street, Alberttown and 22-year-old Lidj Grant, a construction worker from ‘A’ Field, Sophia.

Following the shooting which occurred at about 21:45 Tuesday night, the injured men were taken to hospital by public-spirited citizens.

Police said the men were hospitalised and their conditions were listed as “stable”.

Stewart received a gunshot wound to his right side lower back, and Grant received a gunshot wound to the right side upper back.

Two unknown males armed with handguns, dressed in dark-coloured clothing and wearing face masks, are alleged to have carried out the shooting.

Police visited the scene at about 22:00hrs last night.

According to the victims, on the date and time mentioned, they were riding two separate motorcycles heading North in ‘A’ Field Sophia, in the vicinity of Mercy Wing Vocational Centre, when the two suspects rode up to them on a motorcycle (registration number unknown) and began to discharge several rounds in their direction.

The victims said they jumped off their motorcycles and ran behind a truck which was parked on the parapet of the street.

The suspects continued riding their motorcycle and made good their escape.

The scene was processed by detectives and 15 suspected 9mm spent shells were found.

Several persons were questioned, and efforts were made to locate the suspects, but without success.
