An improvised explosive device early Saturday morning knocked off the back gate of the East Ruimveldt Police Outpost hurling it several feet away, police said.
Head of the Criminal Investigations Department, Deputy Police Commissioner Wendell Blanhum told Demerara Waves Online News that “an improvised explosive device was thrown into the East Ruimveldt Police Station compound.”
Police said the incident occurred at about 12:40 am.
Mr Blanhum said a policewoman was at the outpost at the time, but she “wasn’t harmed”.
Police said they retrieved, from the scene, a “quantity of bolts and nuts, along with debris of a shattered hard plastic container.”
Police said in a statement that a constable on duty at the time said she heard two loud explosions at the southern side of the compound.
“Upon making checks, she discovered the southern gate missing and she immediately notified her superiors,” the force said.
Members of the Crime Scene Unit responded and observed that the metal back gate situated south of the outpost was completely blown off and found about six feet south of the outpost damaged, police said.
Several persons nearby were questioned, and they stated that they heard two loud explosions after which they heard sounds of objects falling onto their roofs, police added.
