Three men, including a resident of Suriname, have been charged with robbing eight persons of more than GY$6 million in cash and valuables at a supermarket at Number 66 Village, Corentyne, Berbice earlier this month, police said.
Those charged with robbery under arms allegedly committed on May 6, 2025, at Golden Spring Supermarket are 58-year-old fisherman Jacob Fable, called Samuel Fable of Paramaribo, Suriname, and Manchester Village, Corentyne, Berbice; 38-year-old labourer Andre “Gun Man” Crandon of 151 Little India, Corriverton, Berbice, and 27-year-old hire car driver Fitztroy ‘Mansel’ Joseph of Number 77 Housing Scheme, Corriverton, Berbice.
The accused were not required to plead to the indictable charges. Bail was refused, and the matter was postponed to June 11, 2025.
Police said they were arrested on May 13 and May 14 and charged with nine counts of robbery under arms committed on the following persons:
- Zhingang Hu, a businessman, age 38, was robbed of GY$1.9 million cash and one cellphone valued at GY$100,000
- Qun Wang, female, was of GY$300,000 cash and one cellphone valued at GY$100,000
- Haresh Persaud was robbed of one Toyota Fielder Wagon motor car, registration number HD 7448, valued at GY$$2,250,000, property of Rameez Hafiz
- Haresh Persaud was further robbed of one Motorola cellphone valued at GY$$40,000, one GTT SIM card valued at GY$$2,000, one gold ring valued at GY$35,000, and GY$$25,000 in cash
- Totaram Roopram, age 36, was robbed of one wallet valued at GY$$2,500, GY$37,000 in cash, one Samsung Galaxy A15 cellphone valued at GY$$45,000 and one E-SIM valued at GY$2,500
- Chandrawattie Roopram, age 54, was robbed of one gold bangle valued at GY$100,000, and one pair of gold earrings valued at GY$50,000
- Lynette Shankar was robbed of GY$898,000 in cash; US$652 equivalent to GY$136,550; EUR€20 equivalent to GY$4,680; one Samsung Galaxy A14 cellphone valued at GY$58,000; one Samsung A02 cellphone valued at GY$35,000, one identification card and several commercial bank cards.
- Shavnarine Richard was robbed of GY$30,000 in cash and one Samsung A12 cellphone valued at GY$20,000.
- Mohamed Shakar was robbed of one Samsung A04 cellphone valued at GY$40,000 and one gold ring valued at GY$170,500.
Investigators said they were informed that our masked suspects wearing hoodies and long clothing entered the supermarket, brandishing handguns and a rifle.
“They ordered the victims to lie face down on the floor and fired several shots during the process. The victims were made to hand over their cash and valuables,” the Guyana Police Force (GPF) added.
Police said the suspects escaped in a silver Toyota Fielder Wagon (HD 7448) owned by one of the victims.
