City businessman Azruddin Mohamed was Thursday charged with falsely declaring a much lower value for his Lamborghini car that was imported from the United States (US) in 2020.
He has been ordered to appear before a Georgetown magistrate on May 29, 2025.
Mr Mohamed is accused of causing to be made and subscribing to a false declaration to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) in violation of the Customs Act on or about December 7, 2020.
He allegedly declared the value of the car to be US$75,300 but the GRA said its true value is US$695,000.
The Commissioner-General of the Guyana Revenue Authority, Godfrey Statia filed the complaint after the United States Department of Justice provided information including an invoice from the company that sold the vehicle.
The GRA is also relying on money transfer records from his account at the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry to the company in the US that sold him the car.
The invoice and the customs declaration and at least one other document supplied by the United States government show that the Lamborghini Roadster SVJ bears the same Vehicle Identification Number VIN# ZHWUN6ZDILLA09394, and is equipped with a class CC 6500 displacement engine size.
As result of the lower value declaration, the GRA in the High Court said Mr Mohamed owes more duties.
