Veteran politician and former General Secretary of the People’s National Congress Reform, Amna Ally, died on Saturday, sources said.

Ally was 69 years.

She passed away at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation at 10:54 AM.

Ally, a retired educator, was suffering from a heart ailment and chronic kidney disease.

At the time of her passing at the Georgetown Public Hospital, she was on dialysis.

Several months ago, she resigned from the PNCR and castigated its leader, Aubrey Norton.

Ms Ally had become politically inactive more than three years ago after Joseph Harmon lost the party’s leadership race.

She and several other then senior party members distanced themselves from the PNCR.

She, however, enjoyed close relations with sevral others especially those who were picked as PNCR parliamentarians following the 2020 general and regional elections.

The PNCR, which Ally served for more than 40 years, did not immediately comment on her passing.

Despite a recent exchange of harsh words with Ally, PNCR Executive Member Ganesh Mahipaul enjoyed good relations with her.

“She was a gem. I will miss her dearly and deeply. I didn’t get to say goodbye and though we had our differences, I never stopped loving her. I’ll miss you. Rest in peace. Amna Ally is no more,” he said.

From the government side, Minister of Human Services and Social Security Dr Vindhya Persaud paid her respects to Ally.

“RIP Amna Ally. We sat on opposing sides in Parliament and she was a former Minister of Human Services. Across the floor we had many fiesty and fiery exchanges but beyond that we had a cordial relationship. Even through her recent illness, we would have had conversations on social Issues etc. We each held our political beliefs and our party alignment, she PNC and me, PPP but nevertheless we maintained that simple and respectful relationship. Deepest condolences to her niece Farzaana, her family, friends and colleagues,” Dr Persaud said on Facebook.
