Gov’t mulls Karpowership proposal for Guyana’s natural gas

The Guyana government is mulling a proposal by the Turkey-headquartered Karpowership to use natural gas from the pipeline to generate and supply 300 megawatts (MW) of electricity, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo said Thursday.

Mr Jagdeo said accepting the proposal depends on whether Guyana’s aged transmission and distribution network could take the load of 300MW and how much longer the Wales gas-to-energy natural gas-fired power plant would take to be completed.

The latest available deadline is November 2025.

“That is being actively studied,” Dr Jagdeo said.

If Karpowership uses Guyana’s gas to generate 300MW of power, he said that would save US$1 million per day in heavy fuel oil.

“It will be for a short period pending on the completion of the power plant. The gas that is already now available could be used immediately while the construction activities are ongoing,” he said.

Karpowership is currently supplying Guyana almost 100MW of electricity from two ship barges whose generators are being powered by bunker C fuel.

Mr Jagdeo said there was no timeframe within which government has to decide on the proposal.
