The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) on Thursday announced that it is conducting joint maritime exercises with the United States Navy this week, underscoring the deepening defense partnership between the two nations.
The exercises, which include Guyana’s patrol vessel GDFS Shahoud and the U.S. Navy’s cruiser USS Normandy, are taking place in international waters and within Guyana’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ), the GDF said.
“The exercises focus on strengthening communications protocols, interoperability, and coordinated manoeuvres, providing both militaries with valuable opportunities to refine operational readiness and share best practices,” the defence force added.
The GDF added that those exercises align with its commitment to safeguarding Guyana’s maritime sovereignty and enhancing regional security through collaborative training.
This engagement also reflects the strong and growing military-to-military relationship between Guyana and the United States.
The US Embassy added that, “this valuable opportunity for both the U.S. and Guyanese militaries reflects the close relationship between our two countries and the strength of our military-to-military cooperation.”
