Seventy-five Venezuelans, including nine children, were repatriated Tuesday to their homeland, one day after they landed in a wooden boat in the vicinity of Abram Zuil, Essequibo Coast, police said.
“They were treated humanely, provided with the basic necessities of food, and placed at an institution. They were deported today (Tuesday) to their country of origin with the assistance of adequate fuel and other amenities,” the Guyana Police Force said in a statement.” They were escorted by the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard, police said.
They included 57 men, nine women and nine children.
Police said the Venezuelans were intercepted at approximately 6:45 on Monday morning by police ranks who were at the time on mobile patrol duty in the vicinity of Abram Zuil seawall.
The Venezuelan nationals were in a wooden boat measuring about 45 feet in length and eight feet in width powered by two 75 HP Yamaha outboard engines.
Members of the Immigration Department were summoned and it was found that the Venezuelans failed to present themselves to the immigration department or port of entry, using the Atlantic Ocean, police said.
