The driver of a Toolsie Persaud Limited lorry is expected to be charged in connection with the death of a pedestrian after he walked into the path of the vehicle on the Bagotstown Public Road, East Bank Demerara, on Friday morning, police said.
Police said the accident occurred at about 11 a.m. when the motor lorry (#GNN 9248), driven by 59-year-old Wayne McBean, a resident of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, struck down an Indo-Guyanese man whose name, age and address were not immediately known.
“Enquiries disclosed that the lorry was proceeding south along the eastern driving lane of Bagotstown Public Road when the pedestrian attempted to cross the road from east to west into the path of the lorry and a collision occurred. As a result, both of the pedestrian’s legs were crushed,” police said.
The driver, along with public-spirited citizens, picked up the injured pedestrian and placed him into a pickup (#PLL 682) in a conscious condition and he was escorted to the Diamond Diagnostic Center by a member of the Guyana Police Force. The victim was pronounced dead on arrival, police said.
Investigators said they obtained a statement from an eyewitness.
