Last Updated on Monday, 27 July 2020, 19:42 by Denis Chabrol

At least four people have been killed in separate road accidents over the weekend across the country.

Police say they are probing a fatal accident that occured at around 17:15 hrs Saturday and involved five vehicles at Montrose Public road, East Coast Demerara, and which resulted in the death of Trevor Managal alias Whistle, 40, of 52 Industry Crown Dam, East Coast Demerara.

Investigations have revealed that a motorcar bearing registration number PXX 2522 collided with the right side rear of motor van GWW 6244 which was proceeding west along the northern lane of the public road. The driver of the van then lost control and collided with three parked vehicles.

Motorcar PXX 2522 then slammed into an electrical pole which is in the center of the median. Mangal who was in the passenger seat of that vehicle suffered severe injuries and was left unconscious. He was taken out and transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The police are also probing a fatal accident that occurred at about 14:00 hrs Sunday at Mon Repos Public road, East Coast Demerara which resulted in the death of Vicram Boodram, 46, of 24 Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara.

Reports are that Boodram was attempting to cross the road using the pedestrian sign when he was hit by a speeding car bearing registration number PPP 5422. Eyewitnesses said Boodram was pitched in the air hitting a lamp post and dragged by the same vehicle a few feet away after landing to the ground. He died on the spot.

The driver, a 25-year-old mechanic, told police that Boodram walked into the path of the vehicle. He is currently in police custody.

The police say they are also investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of two motorcyclists who died in separate accidents.

Leon Wilkins of ‘B’ Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown died following a collision with a pedal cyclist on Mandela Avenue.

The accident reportedly occurred at 18:00hrs when Wilkins crashed into cyclist, Seon Cook, 31. Wilkins was said to have sustained head injuries and was said to have died at the scene. Cook suffered head injuries as well as lacerations about his body and was taken to the hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

Police further said that at about  07:00 hrs Sunday, on the Zorg Public Road, Essequibo Coast, an accident occurred which resulted in the death of Jagdesh Singh, alias Alex,28, of 102 Pomona Housing Scheme, Essequibo Coast.

Singh was riding motorcycle CE 2037 when he lost control of his bike and collided with a cow and eventually ended up in the path of an oncoming canter truck. He sustained injuries to his head and abdomen. He was taken to the Suddie Hospital where he later died.

Up to last month, Guyana recorded 66 road traffic accidents which has caused the deaths of 68 persons.
