Jealousy and an attempt to escape police custody caused a man to have to post bail at GYD$100,000 at the Georgetown Magistrates Court on Thursday.

It is alleged that on September 24, 2016, Jonathan Mohamed accused his reputed wife, Shonta Williams, of being unfaithful to him after which he took a piece of wood and dealt her several lashes about her body. To this, Mohamed pleaded not guilty.

The Court also heard that on the same day, while in police custody for assaulting her, the accused asked to visit the washroom, and while there escaped from the lockups.

He was later recaptured. Mohamed was freed on the charge of assaulting his wife since the she declined to give evidence against him.

For the second charge, Magistrate Fabayo Azore granted the defendant bail and his matter will be called again on October 14, 2016.
