Updated: Man shot dead during drug bust at East Coast Demerara hotel

A man was shot and killed by police during a shootout at a hotel at Ogle, East Coast Demerara Thursday afternoon.A large quantity of cocaine and a gun were recovered.

Head of the Criminal Investigations Department, Senior Superintendent, Wendell Blanhum told Demerara Waves Online News that “police received information about a large scale drug transaction and whilst attempting to arrest the suspects, there was an exchange of gunfire and one of the suspects was fatally wounded.”

Sources identified the man as 51-year old Nigel Joseph of South Ruimveldt, Georgetown. Blanhum said a firearm was recovered from the scene.

Joseph succumbed to gunshot injuries to his abdomen before arriving at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

The Customs Anti Narcotics Unit had some time ago held two men and a quantity of cocaine in a room at that hotel.
