Syringes, tattoo machine, drugs, weapons found in Georgetown Prison

Last Updated on Monday, 16 May 2016, 19:20 by Denis Chabrol

The Guyana Prison Service (GPS) has seized a number of prohibited items from the Camp Street jail and appears to have fragmented a group of prisoners who were at the center of a fiery prison unrest that claimed the lives of 17 inmates.

“During the operation thirteen prisoners were transferred to the different prison locations and a number of prohibited articles were unearthed,” the Prison Service said in a statement.

The movement of the prisoners to other locations came less than one month after President David Granger announced that inmates at the overcrowded Georgetown Prison would be moved to the Mazaruni Prison.

The authorities also seized marijuana, cellular phones, chargers, cigarettes and radio speakers. Below is a full list of the items seized.

The Guyana Prison Service said the search of the prison and transfer of the inmates  lasted from 5:00 AM  to 6:30 PM on Saturday , May 14, 2016 with the assistance from police, soldiers and fire service without any incident. “The aim of the exercise was to remove all prohibited articles within the prison, inclusive of weapons, drugs and cellular phones, if any,” the prison service said.

The prison service said inmates were addressed by the Director of Prisons (ag), Mr. Carl Grahame, DSM, “who urged them to cooperate with all instructions given during and after the operation.”
