War on mosquitoes launched; residents urged to take precautions against fog

As Guyanese authorities seek to push back the Zika Virus, which has so far reportedly infected one Guyanese here, a massive offensive has been launched against mosquitoes in Georgetown and parts of East Coast and East Bank Demerara.

The Ministry of Public Health also urged residents to stop harbouring breeding grounds for mosquitoes and ensure that all foods, domestic animals, young children, the elderly and asthmatic persons to stay away from the direct flow of the fog.

“The Ministry of Public Health reminds Guyanese that vector control is a partnership. While the Ministry of Health will conduct this fogging exercise, residents are encouraged to keep their yards clean by removing all empty containers that can breed mosquitoes and to always sleep under mosquito nets so as to prevent mosquito borne diseases,” said the ministry in a statement.

The Aedes Aegypti mosquito carries the virus that continues to sicken persons especially in Brazil where babies have been born with microcephaly or reduced brains.

Following is the full text of the statement and schedule that has been issued by the Ministry of Public Health.

The Ministry of Public Health, Vector Control Services commenced fogging for vector control on Monday 1^st February, 2016 in identified communities. These fogging exercises will kill the adult mosquitoes which carry mosquito borne diseases.

To ensure that the fogging exercise is most effective, residents in the targeted communities are reminded to open their windows to allow the fog mist into the buildings to kill the adult mosquitoes. To avoid any health problems residents are reminded to cover all drinking water and secure all food stuff (Uncooked and Cooked) to prevent possible contamination, secure all domestic animals and poultry, and to keep persons who suffer from asthmatic conditions, young children and the elderly away from the direct flow of fog.

The fogging exercise will commence at 5:30 p.m. daily from Monday 1^st February, 2016 in the following areas and be completed on 29^th February , 2016.
