General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Clement Rohee has declared that the PPP has no interest in naming someone to take up the post of Deputy Speaker.

Rohee at a press conference on Monday was questioned by reporters about the delay in naming a Deputy Speaker to which he responded that the Party is not interested in the post.

“No we are not, we are not interested in that,” Rohee told reporters.

Since the 11th Parliament commenced on June 10, the PPP was called upon to name a nominee for the post but just about 5 months later, the Party has not done so and has offered no explanation.

At the seventh sitting of the 11th Parliament, a nomination for Deputy Speaker was requested from the opposition. Chief Whip Gail Teixeira said the PPP had none at this time.

The House Speaker, Dr Barton Scotland then announced that the matter be deferred to the next sitting of the House.
