Minibus driver jailed for killing veteran cyclist

A minibus driver, who struck down and killed veteran cyclist, Roy Albert Mendonca, was Monday jailed for 54 months after he was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving.

Sookraj Permaul,26, was convicted for committing the offence on April 2, 2015 at Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown.

At that time, he was driving BNN 6492 in a manner dangerous to the public and caused the death of Mendonca. The court was told that at the time of the incident, Permaul was driving east when he attempted to overtake several vehicles and struck the 67-year old Mendonca.

He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he was pronounced dead on arrival

The cyclist, who lived at Forshaw Street, Queenstown, had recently been awarded for being the top ‘Over 60’ rider.
