A vegetable vendor was Wednesday night shot and robbed at his home at Supply, Mahaica, and two of  the four suspected bandits were caught at Unity Village, police and residents said.

His only name given is “Pappy”.  He was shot to his left foot by one of the bandits.

Pappy, said to be a well-known vendor at Bourda and Stabroek Markets, was robbed of an undisclosed sum of cash and gold jewellery.

Residents said that shortly after the robbery, a high-speed chase was given and eventually the car in which they were travelling ran into a trench.

Police said two of the suspected robbers escaped, while the others were caught and taken to the Mahaicony Hospital for injuries sustained during the accident. Other reports are that they were beaten by residents.

A senior police officer said a handgun was found in the vehicle. A thorough search was  being conducted to ascertain whether any of the stolen cash or jewellery was in the car.
