Updated: Collapse of rice mill silo leaves one dead

One of three workers at Caricom Rice Mills at Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast died after the bottom of a silo collapsed and he was buried by a huge quantity of hot and wet parboiled rice, a company official said.

Dead is 18 year old Treeson Gittens of Richmond Village Housing Scheme, Essequibo Coast. His injured co-worker was taken to the Suddie Hospital.

The company official explained that the workers were underneath the silo when the incident occurred.

Officials of the Ministry of Labour’s Occupational Safety and Health Department, an insurance company and police have already visited the scene of the incident.

Caricom Rice Mills is a subsidiary of the St. Vincent- headquartered East Caribbean Group of Companies (ECGC).
