Veteran gold miner robbed of gun, cash

Last Updated on Wednesday, 27 August 2014, 1:03 by GxMedia

Gold miner Frederick Mc Wilfred was Monday night robbed of his gun and cash at knife-point by a lone bandit who waylaid him as he was entering his yard at Meadow Brook Gardens, Georgetown.

He told Demerara Waves Online News that the robbery occurred about 8 PM moments after he returned home from night prayers at the Kitty Mosque, Sandy Babb Street, Kitty.

Mc Wilfre‎d said the masked perpetrator placed a cold, sharp object to his neck and told him “don’t move before I kill you.”.

The man snatched Mc Wilfred’s bag that contained GUY$300,000 cash and his licensed handgun. “This part of life in Guyana. The only thing is that I’m really sorry that another firearm is abroad in the hands of the wrong people,” said Mc Wilfred.

Recounting the incident, the miner believed that the robber was already in his yard because he was attacked aftr driving his car in his yard and locking the gate. He said that he is usually very alert but he was speaking to someone on his cellular phone when the man pounced on him.

The former President of the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) is a also a past member of the People’s National Congress (PNC) under late President Forbes Burnham.

Mc Wilfred, after staying out of the limelight, made a political comeback in the 2011 general and regional election at which he campaigned for the incumbent Pe‎ople’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC).
