A man was found hanging in a police station cell in the North West District four hours after he was arrested for the alleged unlawful wounding of his girlfriend, police said Sunday.

He has been identified as 31-year old Vivian La Cruz of Zeeburg, West Coast Demerara.

La Cruz., a detainee at the Acquero Police Station, was found about 9:30 Saturday night hanging from a metal bar in his cell by one of the legs of his pants. “He was the only prisoner in the lockups at the time,” said Police Force spokesman, Ivelaw Whittaker.
He was arrested by the police at about 5 PM Saturday following a report made against him of unlawful wounding committed on his girlfriend at Kwebanna, North West District.
The body is at the Charity Hospital Mortuary awaiting an autopsy. Investigations are in progress.
