Lieutenant Ronald Gonsalves

Guyana Defence Force Lieutenant Ronald Gonsalves died and three of his colleagues were hospitalised after they were involved in a vehicular accident Friday afternoon on Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.

The 31-year old Gonsalves hailed from the bauxite mining town of Linden. Sources said he died from a punctured lung. The others who were injured are Lieutenant (CG) John Flores Jr. of Station Street, Kitty, and 25-year old Antonio Eastman of Well Road, West Ruimveldt and Lieutenant Rickford Warden. The GDF said they “were also seriously injured in the accident but their conditions are reported to be stable.”

Eyewitnesses said the car driven by Eastman crashed into a utility pole near the gas station. The pole fell on a woman’s car but no one in that vehicle was injured.

The Guyana Defence Force and the Guyana Police Force are investigating the circumstances of the accident, the army said in a statement.
