A Bartica speedboat operator drowned Thursday morning while navigating the Cuyuni Rapids to an interior location, according to well-placed sources.

He has been identified as 49-year old Carey Persaud of Four Miles Housing Scheme.

Nothing happened to the several passengers because, on instructions, they exited the vessel and walked around the rapids.

The boat was heading from Bartica to an unnamed interior mining location.

The Cuyuni and Mazaruni rivers have in recent months claimed several lives after speedboats sank while heading to and from gold bearing areas.

The Maritime Administration (MARAD) has been emphasising the need for speed boat operators to take precautions when using the waterwways.
