An employee of Baganara Resort, Essequibo River drowned Thursday afternoon after he wandered off from a group of colleagues, entered the river and disappeared, a spokesman said.

He has been identified as 19-year old Ryan Harris. He had been working at Baganara for the past three months as a grounds-man.

The spokesman said the body was recovered about 7 PM by divers who were coincidentally at the resort. The body was taken to the Bartica Hospital.

Preliminary information is that around 5 PM the man was seen walking away from the group towards the Essequibo River and then entered it.  At the time the staff was playing games on the beach and, according to the spokesman, they were not consuming alcohol.

“He is known to be a good swimmer,” said the spokesman. “Very little is known as to what exactly happened.”

There were no guests at the 17-room resort located five miles south of Bartica.
