Gambling leads to windpipe slashing

Last Updated on Saturday, 26 December 2015, 21:01 by GxMedia

A Kumaka ,North West man was up to early Saturday morning clinging to his life after he was stabbed the night before by another man after playing a “chic-chic” board game.

Reports are that Sherwin Smith, aka “Ugly” ,36, who  operates  his board game at Kumaka won more than $100,000 in takings from another man tonight while the game was being played.

Sources said that up to 7 AM, he was air-dashed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was undergoing surgery for a slashed trachea (windpipe) and other injuries.

Sometime around 8 30 pm he left the area to purchase dinner at the L&D Resort when he was pursued by his assailant. The man reportedly pounced on Smith and attempted to rob him and during a scuffle, he stabbed Smith to the neck, severing his windpipe in the process.

The injured man was rushed to the hospital for treatment. Around 11:15 Friday night, an Air Services Limited (ASL) small aircraft departed Ogle for Mabaruma as the doctor based at the hospital at the hill-top community determined that Smith’s injuries were life threatening.

The aircraft landed there around we12 33 Friday morning and he arrived at the GPHC at 3:30 AM.

Kumaka is a community in Barima-Waini region, in northern Guyana. It stands about 35 km southeasterly of Baramanni and about 18 km inland from the Atlantic coast, and at an altitude of 30 metres.
