Mining week this year, to be celebrated under the theme “Green, Clean and Responsible; Securing the future of Mining” is aimed at raising awareness and educating the general public about the operations of the sector which is one of pivotal importance to Gross Domestic Product.To start off the events, on August 22, there will be a mining walk starting at the Bank of Guyana building and concluding at the Guyana Girl Guides Association on Brickdam, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment (NRE) Joslyn McKenzie told the media at the launch of Mining Week activities today.
On August 26 and 27, there will be the National Mining and Quarrying conference held at the Guyana International Conference Centre (GICC), Liliendaal, as well as a grand mining exhibition at the same venue which will feature artifacts, brochures, posters and pictures.
On August 28, there will be an education and training session on mining at the GICC which will be facilitated by the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security, while there will also by a discussion forum held at the same venue.
There will be a tour outreach to a mining community on August 29 that will facilitate 30 persons who will depart from the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) building to Frenchman. On the route, persons will witness beautiful interior scenes, and will have firsthand experience of some of the challenges miners face while carrying out their tasks.
August 29, will also be the day dedicated to the customers when there will be an Appreciation ceremony at the GGMC headquarters.
The week of activities will culminate on August 31, with Pork Knocker’s Day held at the Regatta Pavilion, Golden Beach Bartica.
