Boat capsizes in Cuyuni, no one perishes

Last Updated on Saturday, 26 December 2015, 21:01 by GxMedia

Several miners, who were involved in a boat accident near Matouk Falls, Cuyuni River, were rescued from the dangerous rapids, officials said early Saturday evening.

“In relation to the river mishap in the Cuyuni River, be informed that all the persons who were in the vessel have been accounted for,” Guyana Police Force spokesman Ivelaw Whittaker said in a brief statement.

Details about the cause of the accident were not immediately available.

The incident occurred around 1 PM on the rapids in the vicinity of Matouk Falls where several persons lost their lives in a recent boat mishap.

The Region Seven administration has been informed by police, who returned from the scene, that the miners managed to recover several drums of fuel that were aboard the boat.

Earlier Saturday, police said they had been investigating a report that four persons were missing after a boat capsized in the vicinity of the falls.

Back in May of this year, four persons perished when the boat that they had been travelling capsized in the same area.

In January, 10 persons lost their lives in a collision at Crab Falls located about 25 miles upstream from Bartica.
