A key suspect has been arrested in connection with the killing of a Brazilian woman near a mining pit in Mahdia, police said Wednesday.The woman has been identified as 47-year old Maria Jose Assis Bazerra.
Her body bearing four stab wounds to the left temple was discovered midday Tuesday at Jumbie Backdam, Mahdia.
Ten other persons, who were in the area, have been arrested, according to Chief of Criminal Investigations, Deputy Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud.
Persaud said investigations so far revealed that the woman was last seen alive around 11:30 AM.
The probe team was told that her husband left to go prospecting around 4 AM and several others went to the pit to work
The suspect later went to take breakfast for the group and disappeared and another Brazilian discovered the woman’s body went he went to take lunch.
The man, who had initially disappeared, is being treated as a prime suspect.
