Masked bandits batter, rob Port Kaituma businessman

Last Updated on Saturday, 26 December 2015, 21:01 by GxMedia

R & D Hardware Store, Port Kaituma Main Road.

A Port Kaituma businessman was late Wednesday night beaten in his head with a handgun and tied up after three robbers carted off a huge sum of cash and mercury, he said.

Police have since arrested two suspects and found GUY$100,000 in possession of one of them. No firearm was reportedly found. Police were hunting a third man.

Reynold Moore, the owner of R &D Hardware Store on Port Kaituma Main Road, said he was still bleeding through his nose Thursday morning and he was returning to the hospital for follow-up treatment.

Moore recounted that he was lying in his hammock watching television around 8:40 Wednesday night when three armed and masked men entered the store. Two of them shut the door while a third one unleashed a ‘barrage’ of blows on his head with a handgun while demanding money.

The businessman said that when he handed over GUY$320,000 to the bandits, they demanded more and began ransacking the premises. They eventually found GUY$15,000 behind a microwave. The men also carted off a quantity of mercury.

Before leaving, he said the bandits taped his hands, feet and mouth. Moore said that when he managed to loosen his feet, he ran on the road and stopped a taxi driver who helped untie his hands, take him to the hospital and summon police.

Moore said the police arrived promptly.
