Berbice woman strangled, husband attempts suicide

A Berbice woman has been killed and her reputed husband is under police guard at the Port Mourant Hospital after he reportedly tried to commit suicide.

The Guyana Police Force says it is investigating the murder of Geeta Bissoondyal, 27, of High Reef, Albion, Corentyne.  The force said the killing occurred around 8PM Sunday and identified the husband as the alleged killer.

“Investigations revealed that Geeta Bissoondyal and her reputed husband had a domestic argument at their home during which she was killed,” the police said.

It added that a post mortem examination was performed on Monday by Dr. Vivekanand Brijmohan who gave the cause of death as manual strangulation.

“The suspect is suspected to have drank a quantity of paint thinners and then attempted to hang himself but was prevented from doing so by a resident.”
