Fire destroys part of Science laboratory at St. Rose’s High

Fire of unknown origin Tuesday night destroyed the preparatory area of a Science Laboratory at St. Rose’s High School, Church Street, Georgetown.

Police cordoned off the area to allow fire scene investigators to comb the debris.

Chief Education Officer, Olato Sam and members of the school board visited the scene on the lower flat of the back building.

The security guard on duty said that he checked the building shortly before the fire and saw no suspicious activity.

Had the fire started or caught the old wooden complex, most likely it would have been severely damaged or destroyed.

Fire Chief Marlon Gentle told reporters that quick response and action by fire fighters prevented the fire from spreading. “The guys (firemen) managed to lock it in. There is a lot of stuff on the ground and there are a lot of unanswered questions at this time,” he said.

He could not immediately say whether the fire was the work of arsonists, adding that when fire fighters arrived from Alberttown Station they broke into the laboratory. “They were very robust in their initial fire attack so they were able to keep it locked in there because it could have been worse,” said Gentle.
