Rape-accused Deputy Police Commissioner Fazil Karimbaksh on Tuesday denied that a purported a recording of himself in a conversation with a woman who claims to be his accuser is authentic, instead saying it was generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI).
“Our client vehemently rejects the recording as an authentic account of a conversation involving him and denies making the statements attributed to him. The said AI generated material falsely reproduces his voice,” his lawyer Rizwaun Mohamed said in a statement.
Social media activist, Leroy Smith has since rubbished the claim that the post on Facebook, in which a man was heard offering a woman GY$5 million to settle the matter, was AI generated. He stands by the authenticity of the recording as well as his claim that Mr Karimbaksh allegedly wrote two letters to Digicel seeking phone records for his personal benefit. “While rape accused Fizal Karimbaksh considers whether he really wants to hide behind legal letters or actually challenge our publications in the court of law, we will continue to disseminate and share the said audio recording and those letters from DIGICEL which we have been able to verify are authentic, and which we are prepared to defend should the need arise,” said Mr Smith who has organised protests outside the SOCU office on Camp Road, Georgetown, and has been waging a relentless campaign for Mr Karimbaksh to be charged and removed from office.
Dealing specifically with the alleged offer of GY$5 million to the woman, the lawyer said Mr Karimbaksh, who is SOCU’s Head, vehemently rejects the recording as an authentic account of a conversation involving him and denies making the statements attributed to him.
“The said AI generated material falsely reproduces his voice,” the lawyer said.
The lawyer called for the allegations of rape and threatening behaviour against Mr. Karimbaksh to be addressed through a “thorough, fair and impartial investigation, free from interference, speculation and prejudgment.”
Mr Mohamed threatened to file legal action to protect Mr Karimbaksh’s name, character and reputation, including the institution of proceedings against any person or entity responsible for creating, publishing or disseminating the disputed material, should the evidence establish a lawful basis for such action.
The lawyer said he and his lawyer would not comment further substantively on the recording pending its proper examination.
Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken was recently advised by the Solicitor-General that he could not remove or discipline a Deputy Police Commissioner. Demerara Waves Online News was told the Police Service Commission (PSC) must play a role in disciplinary action action against an officer above the rank of Inspector. The PSC is yet to be reconstituted and would have to await nominees when the National Assembly comes out of its annual recesss.
