High winds blew off the roofs of several houses on the West Coast and West bank Demerara.
Accompanied by heavy rain, the wind uprooted the zinc sheets of many houses at Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara and South Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara. A vacant unfinished house at Cornelia Ida was blown down.
The incident occurred at about 3:30 PM. There were no immediate reports of injury.
Storm damage was also reported in North and South Ruimveldt. The high wind also blew down a transformer in front of Andrews Supermarket.
Up to late Sunday afternoon, residents were busy repairing their roofs ahead of what is expected to be a rainy night.
A resident at Cornelia Ida said her area has been without electricity since the storm because electricity wires were struck by flying zinc sheets.
“When the breeze started blowing we saw that zinc sheets flying like kites. We were so scared. I am so sorry for those people,β Simone (only name given) told Demerara Waves Online News.
Power outages were also reported in South Ruimveldt, Lamaha Springs and Parfaite Harmonie.
Weather forecasters predict that there will be gusty winds are likely over areas with heavy downpours.
