Former Opposition Leader of Guyana, and former leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Robert Corbin died on Sunday.
He was 78 years old.
His brother, Charles Corbin, confirmed the passing of Mr Corbin at a city hospital.
He served as a Deputy Prime Minister from 1985 to 1992 when the PNC was defeated in Guyana’s first free and fair elections in almost 30 years.
Both the PNCR and the Working People’s Alliance have continued to credit him and late WPA co-leader Dr Rupert Roopnaraine for forming A Partnership for National Unity.
Mr Corbin was PNCR leader from 2002 and 2012, having succeeded Desmond Hoyte.
Mr Corbin joined the PNCR’s youth army in the 1970s and quickly found his way on that party’s Central Executive. He eventually became the PNCR’s General Secretary.
Robert Herman Orlando Corbin, also known as Brezhnev, was an Attorney-at-Law.
He fathered five children. His wife,Carol, was a senior officer at the CARICOM Secretariat and the Public Utilities Commission.
