Guyanese law firm staffer found unconscious at Indian airport hotel, declared dead at hospital

A long-serving accountant of the well-known Guyanese law firm, Hughes, Fields and Stoby (HFS), was found found unconscious in a room at the transit hotel in India and was later declared dead at a city hospital.

The deceased was identified as Racquel Olivia Chandni Seecharran, a Guyanese national.

Attorney-at-Law Nigel Hughes told Demerara Waves Online News that he was “deeply saddened and seriously wounded. She was not just an excellent team member she a high ranking member of our family at HFS.”

She worked as an accountant at the law firm for about 20 years. Mr Hughes said she had travelled overseas for medical reasons.

Seecharran was scheduled to travel to Mangaluru by an IndiGo flight at 2.35 p.m. on Wednesday. She had arrived from London on a Virgin Atlantic flight at around 6.10 p.m. on Tuesday (September 15) and was scheduled to travel to Mangaluru by an IndiGo flight at 2.35 p.m. on Wednesday (September 16).

The Hindu.com reported that the woman from Guyana, who had arrived at India’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) from London, was found unconscious in a room at the transit hotel in the airport’s Terminal 2 on Wednesday (September 16) and was later declared dead at a city hospital.

According to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which guards KIA, at around 10.30 a.m., as her scheduled hotel check-out time approached, the receptionist tried contacting her over the phone. However, she neither answered the call nor responded.

Hotel staff subsequently went to the room at the Transit/Day Hotel in the arrival city-side area of T2 and found her lying unconscious. The airport medical team rushed to the room and provided the passenger with medical assistance. She was subsequently shifted in an ambulance to a nearby private hospital.

At around 12.22 p.m., the attending doctor examined her and conducted an ECG. As no pulse was detected, she was declared dead at around 1.08 p.m. The incident was immediately reported to the local police, who are carrying out the medico-legal formalities and further inquiry. The circumstances surrounding her death are yet to be established.
