The Berbice Bridge Company Inc (BBCI) has wound up its operations and the river bridge sold to the Guyana government for GY$400 million, former board chairman Paul Cheong said Wednesday.
“It has been handed over to government,” he told Demerara Waves Online News. He said government paid over the GY$400 million on Wednesday.
A usually reliable source told Demerara Waves Online News said the Ministry of Public Works is now responsible for the operations and maintenance of the bridge with the company’s former staff members.
Word of the deal came just days after the Official Gazette published notices concerning the winding up of the company and the appointment of a liquidator.
BBCI Secretary Amarnauth Singh states in the notice published on September 12 that the company’s members passed a special resolution on August 21, 2026 that the company would be wound up from that date. In a separate notice dated September 4, chartered accountant Raan Motilall states that he was appointed liquidator.
Government had also announced plans to build a new four-lane bridge across the Berbice River at another location.
The 1.57 kilometre Berbice bridge was constructed at a cost of GY$8 billion and began operations in 2008. The National Insurance Scheme was one of the major shareholders.
