UG to host 6th annual Caribbean Sociological Association conference

The 6th Annual Caribbean Sociological Association (CSA) conference will be held at University of Guyana in Georgetown Guyana during the period September 23-25, 2026, the organisation said in a statement.

CSA said scholars, researchers, advocates, youths, and practitioners from the Caribbean, North and South America will converge under the theme “Sociology of Societies in Transition: Exploring Tensions Between Stability and Change”.

“The significance of this theme emerges as several Caribbean societies, including Guyana, are undergoing various socio-economic transformations driven by either the discovery of substantial oil reserves, post-disaster recovery, geopolitical interventions, and other factors,” CSA said in a statement.

The conference will feature over 40 presentations that examine these socio-economic, political, environmental, geopolitical and digital transitions within the Caribbean, as well as North and South America.

Dr Duane Edwards, President of CASA was quoted as saying in the statement that, “the conference being held in Guyana promises to bring participants from across the Caribbean and the diaspora to discuss countries experiencing various kinds of transitions and change. There is perhaps no better place to hold this conference than in Guyana. Guyana itself is undergoing one of the region’s most notable economic transition. Over the few days, participants will be given the unique opportunity of witnessing glimpses of transitions and the real-time impact it has on the society”.

A key highlight of the conference is the delivery of a keynote presentation by Professor Paloma Mohammed-Martin, Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana. As the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana and a Guyanese behavioral scientist, academic leader, and cultural advocate, her presentation is uniquely positioned to set the tone for what promises to be a ground-breaking and impactful platform in the promotion of sustainable development regionally and internationally.
