An undisclosed sum of money was stolen from an unnamed religious organisation on Woolford Avenue, Georgetown, earlier this week, police said Friday.
The alleged crime was committed on a 63-year-old security guard on Tuesday at about 02:45hrs at a religious organisation located on Woolford Avenue, Georgetown.
The Guyana Police Force did not say whether the alleged armed robbery occurred at the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana or the Mahatma Gandhi Youth Organization.
The police force’s public relations department is usually unresponsive to queries by the media.
Investigators were informed that the security guard was conducting checks around the compound when he was confronted by four masked males, one of whom was reportedly armed with a knife, while another was armed with a crowbar.
Police were told that during the incident, the security guard was restrained and relieved of his cellular phone.
“One of the suspects remained with him while the other three proceeded towards the building.
Further investigations revealed that entry was gained into the building through a window on the western side. The lower flat of the building was subsequently found ransacked and an undisclosed amount of cash was reported stolen,” the Guyana Police Force said.
Police said the suspects subsequently escaped from the compound.
CCTV footage was obtained and is being reviewed as part of the investigation, police added.
